Just to let you know I sent home a hard copy study guide this week. Weird I know, but the students received them in class and had two days to complete it and hand it back in.

TEST over plate tectonics this Thursday

We will have a test over "plate tectonics" on Thursday of this THIS week before break. I will have the study guide up tomorrow. Please review content in preparation.

IN CLASS Earthquake

Students will participate in an IN CLASS earthquake project. They will be in groups of 3-4. The goal is to construct an earthquake strong structure. Here are the guidelines:

  • Each group must hand in a blue print of their building design.
  • Each group will be given 70 popsicle sticks to begin. They will be given sticks in increments of 10.
  • Each structure needs to be atleast 26 inches at the tallest point.
  • Each structure needs to have a platform for the container of rocks to rest during the test. The platform must be off the ground at a minimum of 5 inches.
  • Each structure will be tested under the stress of an earthquake for a duration of 1 min.

We will work on the project on Monday and Tuesday. Testing will be on Wednesday.

Plate Tectonics HOME projects

Plate tectonics HOME projects

This project is centered around our unit on plate tectonics. Students will draw a project out of a bucket. The possible project themes are.... earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunami, Earth's layers, and or mid ocean ridges. Students will also present their project in class. Students will have until after Christmas to complete it.

* Students will make a project at home. I would encourage using house hold items and not bought kits. YOU DON'T HAVE TO SPEND MONEY TO COMPLETE THIS PROJECT :) I'm looking for creativity.

Student will also include a 1 page written report about their project including but not limited to these questions:
* What plate boundary is responsible for the creation of your project?
* Where is a real life example located on the earth of your project?
* What kind of damage can your project create in real life?
* Write a section about how you made your project.
* What did you make it out of?Who helped you?
* How long did it take to build?

The Rock Cycle Project

Today we officially started the video Rock Cycle Project. Here are the guidelines:

  • Students are to create a video presentation on The Rock Cycle. Can be a song parody, original song or rap, a theater skit, puppets, etc... Be creative!!!!
  • They can work in partners up to four people (they can be from different classes)
  • Must be at least 45 seconds in length
  • All partners must be involved... either holding the camera, acting, or directing (if doing a lego project)
  • Submitted on flash drive, emailing me, or even uploading on You Tube for me to search. (I will not be putting these on You Tube)
  • Due November 18... BUT it can be turned in at any time before then
Excellent video samples can be found on You Tube by searching: The Rock Cycle Song or Rock Cycle Lego.

Homework Nov 3

Homework due tomorrow..

Write a short poem for your teacher about rocks. It can be about what they look like, what they feel like, how you use them, or how they make you feel.

Turn in options:

Type it and print
Write it in your notebook
email it

Homework Essay

Write a one-page essay for a younger student that describes a mineral or rock and its use.

* This can be written in your science notebook OR typed and printed out.

* If you type it out save it on your flash drive just in case it gets misplaced.

Earth Day 2011

Students brought in trash for credit. Cleaning our Earth is important. Did you know that if you recycle you would probably not need to pay 75.00 for that trash service?! Try it. It's easy!!

Periodic Table

Create a new word document and follow the instructions.

1. Find a picture of Sir Isaac Newton or Albert Einstein and paste in on the page where at the top centered.

2. Copy and paste these questions. Look them up and answer them in complete sentences. NO COPYING AND PASTING

3. Who is Dmitri Mendeleev?

4. What is a molecule?

5. What is the Hindenburg and what do people believe happened to it?

6. In what year did the periodic table get created?

7. What is the official definition of an atom?

8. Choose 2 elements you have never heard of and explain what they are and how we use them in our daily lives.

Print it off and hand it to Mr. Howard. OR e-mail it. anthony.howard@mccardinals.org

Atoms

Students put together some structures of an atom today. Tomorrow we will have a short quiz over this week's studies on atoms.

New Unit

We have said good-bye to Earth Science for now completing our Compass Directions last week. Students used the Ipads to navigate and write directions for other groups, and myself, to follow. If we made it to their destination, they all received $100.00!!! Ok, I made the money part up. The kids really enjoyed wondering the halls and counting steps. 90% of all sixth graders wrote very specific directions and were successful.

Now we dive into Physical Science. Students started off this week using the Ipads to create presentations with the focus question, "What are atoms?"

For Black History month we are going to research some famous African American scientist and their inventions or studies that have helped shape the world we live in today. Here are the expectations;

* You are going to create a powerpoint presentation.

* Research 5 African American scientists. Make a slide for EACH scientist. Be sure to include the following information on the slide:
Name
Dates they lived
What exactly did they do or invent
What year did they make their invention or study
Include a picture if possible of the scientist

You need to have 7 total slides. The first slide will be the title slide and the last slide will be the sources slide.
