EROSION!!!!!!!!!!

We have entered the studies of Earth science. We will venture into the details of our Earth, how the surface formed, weather, atmosphere, etc.. We have been using the resources of Extreme Explorer magazine for kids, Bill Nye, and United Streaming up to this point. Students have been able to visually see the vocab from this unit and will be working hands-on tomorrow with erosion and weathering. The students are really participating and sharing their prior knowledge with peers!!!!

MEAP MEAP

Whew... Finally we have closed the books on the MEAP test. Students seemed to have done their best, which is all we can ask of them. "Write what you know." We can get things back to normal around here now. Remember to check your kids for homework! They can't use the MEAP test as an excuse for not having any. :)

Thanks Jessica for editing my work here... :)

Producers, Consumers, Decomposers

Here are the Michigan GLCES that we have been learning more about this past week.

L.OL.06.51 Classify organisms (producers, consumers, and
decomposers) based on their source of energy for growth and development.
L.OL.06.52 Distinguish between the ways in which consumers and
decomposers obtain energy.

Click on the link to play a classification game and learn more about the energy pyramid and producers, consumers, and decomposers...

Homework question!!!!

Leave a comment for your homework...

As we look at classification, we are left pondering how we are affected when certain organisms are placed on the endangered species list. Find an animal on the endangered species list and find what it eats. How long has it been on the list? No student should have the same organism chosen. Click on this link to view the list, then research what it eats...

Endangered List in MI

List the organism, what it eats, where it can be found...

Science homework for tonight!!

Students read an article on Bloodsuckers in class today. The assignment was for the students to write a comparison paper on all the animals that were mentioned in the article. Keep in mind the questions, Where can we find them? What characteristics do they have? What type of animals do they feed on?.

Students must compile the information in a comparison paper. COMPLETE PARAGRAPHS AND SENTENCES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This paper is due at the beginning of class tomorrow.

Water Water Water

Our Earth consists of mostly water.... Ask your child where some of the water we have is on Earth. Over the past week we have been soaking or minds with Earth's water and where we can find it. From salt water to fresh water, including groundwater, springs.... the list goes on an on.

Today in class the students conducted a lab to test how clay would or would not float in a container of water. The students were covered with clay (some actually were, sorry:) and working together to test each possible way. Ask your child which one worked...

Great job today kids!!!!

Football game.. and the trash....

It was nice talking with everyone tha I had seen at the game last night. Luke, my son, really enjoyed playing with those that stopped by.
On a science note, did you notice all that plastic just thrown down the bleachers... YIKES!!!!!!!!! Don't worry they cleaned it up, but did they recycle it?
Maybe we can work something out with the highschool about setting some bins out there to have recycled... Something to think about. Any ideas?

SCIENCE extra credit opportunity...

Here is a little extra credit opportunity for anyone who checks the blog from my science class. Bring in any books from home, or articles printed from the Internet that have information on icebergs, continental glaciers, natural springs, valley glaciers, polar ice caps, or atmosphere water vapor... We will be developing presentations about each of these and any information would be helpful to you and your classmates. Show me in the morning and I'll hook you up with some extra points!!!!!!!!!!!!! Have a good night, what's left of it.

READING !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just a reminder that my reading class has a reading test tomorrow over Number the Stars!!!!

Lakes and Ponds

As our adventure continues with where we can find water on this Earth, I would like to thank Bill Nye for supporting our lesson with his knowledge. The knowledge we now know about lakes and ponds will increase our existing knowledge about water we have right here in Jackson County. It may sound simple to explain how lakes and ponds are different, but do we really know? How about you? Can you explain the difference between a lake and a pond?

If you need help go here... differences

Bring me your trash!!!!!!!

Yes, the year has started off and I'm asking the kids to bring me their trash. Well, not all of it, but plastic, cardboard, tin cans... things like that. It's their future we are trying to clean up, they should be involved. You can see after just two weeks in school I was off to recycle the plastic. I had to actually leave the cardboard at school because I ran out of hands and room in the beast. (The beast is what I call my car. She isn't the greatest looking car, but I get from A to B on the map.)
I'm proud of the kids for taking responsibility and helping to reduce our landfills. So keep it up kids!!! I'll take what you have!!!

Fred the Fish

Our first couple weeks in school have seemed to fly by!!! The students in science had the opportunity to meet my dear friend Fred the Fish. Fred was brave enough to endure another adventure of my pollution unit. (L.EC.M.4 Environmental Impact of Organisms- All organisms (including humans) cause change in the environment where they live. Some of the changes are harmful to the organism or other organisms, whereas others are helpful.
L.EC.06.41 Describe how human beings are part of the ecosystem of the Earth and that human activity can purposefully, or accidentally, alter the balance in ecosystems.
L.EC.06.42 Predict possible consequences of overpopulation of organisms, including humans, (for example: species extinction, resource depletion, climate change, pollution).

After the story demonstration the students designed posters using Fred (Just like using Tiger Woods to endorse Nike or Gatorade) to get the word out about what is going on around our communities, and around the Earth!!!
The students really seemed to enjoy Fred's story...

Welcome to our classroom BLOG!!!!!!!!!!!

I have created this blog for my students and parents to stay connected throughout the semester. I will post activities, upcoming classroom topics, and HOMEWORK, along with any other thoughts that might enter during the year. I encourage anyone to leave comments or questions under each of the posts. Please leave your name or ID for me to see as I cannot respond back if I don't really know who to respond to. I'm very excited to create this opportunity for the students to further bring technology into their lives!! Welcome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
